Designing lessons, materials and pedagogies for inclusive learning in STEM

Keynote by Prof Geoffrey Wake
University of Nottingham, United Kingdom

In this presentation, I draw on ongoing work that seeks to develop dialogic approaches to learning to support students of all abilities. Fundamental to our work in mathematics is the careful design of lesson materials that aim to focus student thinking on key conceptual understanding. We focus on important topic areas and highlight a number of representations, such as the double number line, that can support understanding in areas that are connected across the curriculum. The lessons and tasks seek to to challenge students’ thinking whilst supporting pedagogies that attempt to develop dialogic approaches in the classroom. Overall we aim to support student-student and teacher-student collaboration in constructing meaning through discussion. In pursuit of these aims our project has initiated and developed teacher learning communities that collaborate and develop professional knowledge across schools. As a result of our work to date I propose new models of learning for both students and teachers.

Biodata

Geoff Wake is Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Nottingham where he leads the Centre for Research in Mathematics Education. The Centre has a strong track record of designing and developing resources that promote approaches to teaching and learning of problem solving and concept development. In recent years much of this design work, in addition to having impact in the UK, has been substantially focused overseas in collaboration with colleagues in the USA, Australia, Japan and across Europe.

Geoff's own research has, for many years, focused on problem solving, modelling and applications of mathematics. This has included research in workplaces as well as schools and colleges and also in the development of national qualifications. Most recently he has, in collaboration with colleagues in Japan, been working to develop collaborative communities of teacher researchers using lesson study to inform development of teaching practice in problem solving.
